Volkswagen AG is studying whether to seek damages from former CEO Martin Winterkorn and other former management board members for their roles in the company’s diesel emission cheating scandal, Sueddeutsche Zeitung reports.
Stephan Weil, who represents the German state of Lower Saxony on VW’s supervisory board, says the idea is under “serious consideration” and will be acted upon pending the outcome of investigations into the crisis.
VW has insisted since the scandal became public in September 2015 that only relatively low-level managers knew about the company’s efforts to evade diesel emission laws. But the U.S. filed criminal conspiracy charges against Winterkorn in May. And last week German prosecutors arrested Rupert Stadler, CEO of VW’s Audi unit, in connection with the cheating.
