Renault SA plans to debut its first all-electric car in India within five years.
The vehicle is likely to be the e-Kwid, a battery-powered version of its popular Kwid small crossover vehicle. Renault says the EV will be part of the company’s “Drive the Future” plan to electrify 60% of its model lineup by 2022 by adding eight all-electric and 12 hybrid vehicles by 2022.
During that period, Renault also plans to add three piston-powered new models in India. The timing of its electrification activities in India awaits clarification of the country’s EV adoption policy. The carmaker also notes that local sourcing for the batteries required will be a key factor in lowering production costs.
Renault already has conducted preliminary road trials of the e-Kwid in India. The vehicle rides on the low-cost CMF-A platform (common module family architecture) that also carries the company’s Datsun RediGO crossover.
Other carmakers also have announced plans to add electrified powertrains to their Indian vehicles. The group includes Hyundai, Mahindra, Suzuki-Toyota and Tata.
