The head of Toyota Motor Corp.’s Lexus luxury car unit tells The Economic Times that the brand is studying a plan to establish production in India.
President Yoshihiro Sawa says that steep import tariffs and additional taxes for imported hybrid vehicles make local production a compelling option. ET notes that import duties exceed 100% compared with fees of 30%-40% for domestically produced vehicles.
Lexus entered the Indian market this year with three hybrid sedans and crossover models imported from Japan. The brand has established an initial sales network of four dealerships in the country. Sawa describes the effort as a “good start.” But Lexus would need more sales outlets and considerably greater volume to justify local production.
Lexus currently assembles vehicles in Japan and the U.S. The brand had planned to launch production in China but in 2015 delayed doing so until at least 2018.
