India could require ride-hailing services such as Ola and Uber to switch to electric power for 40% of their vehicles by April 2026.
The scheme would begin by requiring such companies to electrify 2.5% of their fleets by 2021, 5% by 2022 and 10% by 2023, according to Reuters. The news service cites government documents and an unnamed source.
The government’s transport, power and renewable energy ministries are recommending that India also push electrification by 2026 for conventional taxi services and all other commercial operations that use cars. The committee also wants motorcycles and scooters sold for commercial purposes to go electric by early 2023.
The ministries further suggest that cities begin converting to electric buses beginning at 5% of their fleet in 2023 and reaching 30% in 2026 before converting to all-electric thereafter.
Reuters notes that sales of electric vehicles in India tripled last year, but only to 3,600 units in a national car market of 3.3 million units.
