Hyundai Motor Co. plans to launch an in-vehicle Ethernet communications platform in “hyper-connected” production vehicles next year.

The carmaker has been working with Cisco Systems Inc. on the technology since April 2016. The partners demonstrated an updated version of the system this week at the CES electronics show in Las Vegas.

Building on current controller-area-network architectures, the Ethernet system would enable processing speeds of 1 Gbps. Marvell Semiconductor Inc. also is developing a 1-Gbps Ethernet system.

Hyundai and Cisco say Ethernet-based systems can simultaneously and securely handle large data sets coming from multiple components, including autonomous driving systems and telematics communications. Other purported benefits include over-the-air software updates and faster development cycles.
