Sweden’s myFC Holding AB is teaming up with materials specialist Granges AB to develop a lightweight version of myFC’s patented Lamina fuel-cell system to help extend the driving range of electric vehicles.
The partners aim to half the weight of the fuel cell unit, which myFC claims could double an EV’s range. The companies plan to unveil a prototype sometime next year.
Founded in 2005 as a spin-off from KTH Royal Institute of Technology, myFC manufactures micro fuel cells and chargers for smartphones and other portable consumer electronic devices. Its JAQ Hybrid platform, which integrates a proton-exchange-membrane fuel cell stack with a hydrogen generation system to charge smartphones and tablets, was launched earlier this year.
The cooperation will mainly take place between myFC’s development unit in Stockholm and Granges’ counterpart in Shanghai. Granges, which also is based in Stockholm, describes itself as the largest producer of rolled aluminum for heat exchangers, with content on about 50% of all new vehicles.
