Ford Motor Co. is looking closely at a plan to launch higher-volume production of a medium-duty electric delivery van it developed with logistics company Deutsche Post DHL Group.
The StreetScooter Work XL is an electric van that uses components from Ford’s Transit van. Deutsche Post developed the original StreetScooter as an electric minivan for its own use. But in April it partnered with Ford to develop the larger van and said it plans to market the model to other delivery services.
Reuters says Deutsche Post is now looking for a second production site that could double annual output to 20,000 units by the end of this year.
Ford is pondering a plan that would add StreetScooter production at its Fiesta small-car plant in Cologne.
“The demand is there,” agrees Ford of Germany Chairman Gunnar Herrmann. But he says Ford could build the Streetscooter profitably only if the company ignores its usual manufacturing system and considers a “creative” way to assemble the vehicle.
