Daimler AG says it will spend €2.6 billion ($3.2 billion) through 2019 to develop electric heavy-duty trucks and equip them with self-driving and connectivity features.
The company’s Mercedes-Benz Truck unit has been testing two sizes of electric eActros trucks, rated at 18 and 25 metric tons. The two- and three-axle trucks have a maximum range of 200 km (124 miles) per charge and are intended for work in urban areas.
Daimler says it will deliver 10 of the electric trucks to customers in Germany and Switzerland over the next few weeks. The company also intends to begin mass producing the two models by 2021.
Tesla Inc. claimed last month that its electric Semi heavy-duty truck tractor will be able to travel 500 miles per charge when it goes on sale next year. But Martin Daum, the board member responsible for Daimler Trucks, tells reporters current battery technology doesn’t permit that range.
