General Motors Co.’s Cadillac brand has begun shipping top-of-the-line CT6 luxury sedans equipped with the company’s self-driving Super Cruise system.

Cadillac is drawing attention to the semi-autonomous system this week by driving a dozen of top-of-the-line CT6 sedans equipped with the technology from New York City to Los Angeles. The system functions only on limited-access expressways.

Super Cruise also uses a camera to determine whether the driver is paying attention to the road during hands-free operation. If not, the system delivers audio, visual and physical alerts. Should the driver fail to respond, the system turns on the emergency flashers, brings the vehicle to a stop and calls the GM OnStar’s emergency center.

Several other carmakers offer semi-autonomous driver aids that also accelerate, steer and brake a car automatically under certain conditions. But GM says Super Cruise is the first to enable prolonged hands-free driving—as long as the driver remains alert to traffic conditions.
