BMW Group has launched its Battery Storage Farm in Leipzig, Germany, for repurposed lithium-ion batteries removed from out-of-service electric vehicles.
The facility, which has capacity for 700 batteries, will supply power to and from the power grid and to an unspecified industrial customer. Initial plans call for a mix of 500 new and used packs until more BMW electric cars are introduced and come to the end of their life.
The battery farm also can store energy generated from wind turbines located on the grounds of BMW’s Leipzig complex.
BMW has produced 100,000 electric i3 cars since introducing the vehicle in late 2013. The high-end i8 EV was launched a year later. Both vehicles are built at BMW’s adjacent vehicle manufacturing plant in Leipzig.
Germany’s Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy helps fund BMW’s second-life battery program.
