Volkswagen AG plans to introduce a production version of its sleek I.D. Vizzion electric vehicle concept by 2022.
The carmaker unveiled the midsize sedan at this week’s Geneva auto show. The vehicle will ride on VW’s “MEB” architecture, which will be used for as many as 15 I.D. electric models by 2025.
The I.D. Vizzion will replace the Phaeton as the flagship model in VW’s lineup. VW already has announced plans to produce two other I.D. concepts, the Crozz crossover and Buzz microbus, starting in 2020.
The Vizzion concept is powered by two electric motors with a combined output of 302 hp. VW estimates the car’s 111-kWh battery will provide a 665-km (413-mile) driving range on the European driving cycle, which would be significantly more than any current EV.
It isn’t clear how much of the concept’s advanced technology and design features, such as the rear-hinged second-row doors, will make it to production. The vehicle’s Level 5 autonomous interior—no steering wheel or foot pedals—likely won’t be introduced for another decade.
Other features include a facial recognition camera that adjusts the interior to preset preferences and prevents unauthorized users from taking the controls. High-definition Matrix lights in the grille can project a crosswalk on the sidewalk to signal pedestrians that it is safe to cross in front of the vehicle.RELATED CONTENT
