AB Volvo is testing artificial intelligence software that helps truck drivers identify the awareness and intentions of pedestrians and other road users.
The system uses technology developed by Perceptive Automata, a Somerville, Mass.-based startup, to predict a person’s movement by interpreting visual cues. Among the attributes studied are eye contact, posture, physical orientation and head movement.

Using 360° sensors on the vehicle, the technology can simultaneously monitor and assess the behavior of a large number of road users, according to the partners. Onboard displays and audio cues alert drivers to potential risks.
In addition to enhancing a driver’s situational awareness, the technology can be incorporated into driver-assist systems to help avoid or minimize the severity of an accident. The system also could be applied to future autonomous vehicles.
The partners demonstrated the system in a Volvo VNR 300 heavy-duty truck at Dependable Highway Express’ facilities in Ontario, Calif. DHE, a trucking logistics specialist, also provided real-world data from its fleet operations to help customize the AI software for trucking applications.
