Truckmaker AB Volvo has signed a deal with Nanyang Technological University in Singapore to develop and test autonomous electric buses over the next two years.
Two 39-ft Volvo 7900 electric buses, which already are in operation in global markets, will be equipped with GPS, lidar sensors and control units. One will operate on campus as part of NTU’s regular bus flee. The second bus will be tested in simulated real-world conditions at the university’s research center for autonomous vehicles.
Public testing of the buses will begin early next year. The buses will be equipped with roof-mounted OppCharge interfaces that will allow the buses to use fast-charging stations supplied by ABB.
Volvo previously has demonstrated autonomous systems in mining, quarry and refuse collection operations. The Singapore bus application will be the first time the company has tested the technology in public transportation.
