Volvo Car Corp. has signed a deal to supply ride-hailing service Uber Technologies Inc. with as many as 24,000 self-driving vehicles over three years.
Uber, which will add its own sensors and software to the vehicles, will debut the self-driving taxis in unspecified U.S. cities.
Volvo and Uber began working together last year to co-develop robotic vehicle systems using Volvo’s Scalable Product Architecture, which carries the XC90, S90 sedan and V90 wagon. The companies began pilot testing 100 self-driving XC90s in Pittsburgh late last year.
Volvo initially will supply Uber with vehicles built at the company’s plant near Gothenburg, Sweden. The carmaker’s new factory in South Carolina also may supply the project when the next-generation XC90 is added at the plant in 2021.
