U.S. Appeals Court Upholds $10 Billion VW Diesel Settlement
A U.S. appellate court in San Francisco has upheld a deal in which Volkswagen AG spent $10 billion to compensate owners of 475,000 vehicles powered by 4-cylinder engines that had been rigged to evade emission limits.

A U.S. appellate court in San Francisco has upheld a deal in which Volkswagen AG spent $10 billion to compensate owners of 475,000 vehicles powered by 4-cylinder engines that had been rigged to evade emission limits.
The three-judge panel rejected a complaint by a disgruntled VW owner who opted to retain the right to sue VW separately but also sought to challenge the compensation plan anyway. The court rules that he had no statutory right to intervene.
Under terms of the settlement, VW paid affected owners compensation and offered to buy back their vehicles or repair them. The plaintiff claimed the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency should have required under terms of the Clean Air Act that VW buy back all affected cars for their original purchase price.
