Toyota Motor Corp. and Mazda Motor Corp. confirm earlier media reports that they will open a jointly operated assembly plant in Huntsville, Ala., in 2021.

The $1.6 billion project will create a facility able to make 300,000 cars and crossover vehicles per year. Output will be evenly split between the Toyota Corolla midsize sedan and an unnamed new Mazda crossover model.

The facility, located 14 miles from a Toyota engine plant near Huntsville, will be Toyota’s 11th manufacturing site in the U.S.

Mazda has no current manufacturing capacity in the U.S. The company made cars in Flat Rock, Mich., between 1987 and 1992 before selling the plant, which is now wholly owned by Ford Motor Co.
