The U.K. has chosen a site near Coventry to erect a complex that will develop manufacturing systems for next-generation electric car batteries.
Located in West Midlands, the National Battery Manufacturing Development Facility’s mission will be to identify early- and mid-stage battery research and seek ways to scale up emerging technologies for commercial production.
England’s Dept. for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy says the independent center will be open to all British companies that wish to develop advanced battery technologies. Coventry and Warwickshire county led a consortium that prevailed over other bidders to win the project.
The center will be the U.K.’s first battery development facility ever. The project is being backed by £80 million ($108 million) in government funding under the U.K.’s £246 million ($333 million) Faraday Battery Challenge launched in July. The scheme aims to help establish England as a global center for battery technology and innovation.
