Toyota Plans Fuel Cell R&D Center in China

Toyota Motor Corp. has partnered with Tsinghua University to open a research and development center in Beijing for fuel cell-related systems and other "green" technologies.
In addition to fuel cell vehicles, the new Tsinghua-Toyota Joint Research Institute will evaluate the use of hydrogen to address China’s energy problems. The two organizations, which have worked together on other projects for 20 years, also will collaborate on research aimed at curbing traffic congestion.
Toyota currently offers the fuel cell-powered Mirai sedan in select markets and is developing fuel cell systems for trucks and buses. The carmaker also has offered royalty-free access to about 5,700 fuel cell patents since 2015. Toyota began supplying fuel cell parts to Chinese commercial vehicle makers Foton and SinoHytec.
