Suzuki Motor says it won’t join an effort by Toyota and Panasonic to develop batteries for electric vehicles, but it might buy batteries from the companies.

Yesterday Toyota and Panasonic announced they might partner to co-develop advanced battery cells and look for ways to reduce production costs. Suzuki President Toshihiro Suzuki tells reporters there is “no room” for his company in that effort, Reuters reports.

Suzuki and Toyota agreed last month to make and sell EVs in India by 2020. Under the agreement, Toyota will supply the necessary technology, and Suzuki will build the EVs and supply the to both companies. The two companies said in March that they will collaborate on manufacturing in the country in support the government’s “Make in India” initiative.

Last April, Suzuki partnered with Toshiba and Denso to make lithium-ion batteries in India. Output will be used primarily in electrified vehicles made by Maruti Suzuki India venture. India has vowed to phase out sales of non-electric vehicles by 2030.
