Stuttgart, Germany, will begin banning older diesel-powered vehicles next year in an effort to meet air quality standards.
The ban will apply to cars that meet Euro 4 or older standards, according to the state of Baden-Wuerttemberg. The region hopes that other steps to improve air quality in Stuttgart, home to Mercedes-Benz and Porsche, will avoid the need to limit newer Euro 5 diesels.
The restrictions target concentrations of nitrogen oxides, a pollutant linked to respiratory diseases. Diesels generally are cleaner than gasoline engines in emissions of hydrocarbons and carbon dioxide. But their NOx levels are often considerably higher.
Reuters notes that bans on some or all diesels in city centers also are planned for Athens next year and by 2025 in Copenhagen Madrid, Mexico City and Paris.
