Shanghai Opens More Roads for Self-Driving-Car Tests

Shanghai has expanded the allowable public roadways for autonomous and connected car testing by nearly sevenfold to 37 km (23 miles), the Shanghai Daily reports.
The city’s government announced earlier this year that it would allow such testing on fewer than 6 km of public roadways. Now it has expanded the network to 12 roads covering 37 km: 11 km for testing by carmakers and 26 km available for commercial vehicle tests.
The designated roadways also are available for connectivity testing involving vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-infrastructure evaluations, the report adds.
Shanghai issued its first road-test permits last spring to three carmakers—BMW, Nio and SAIC Motor—who have since conducted about 12,000 km (7,500 miles) of tests, according to the report. Shanghai expects the number of licensed testers will rise to 10 carmakers by the end of 2018.
