Russia’s Yandex to Test Autonomous Cars with No Drivers

Russian internet and ride-hailing provider Yandex NV says it will begin commercial service in August with five self-driving cars that don’t have a backup driver on board, Automotive News reports.
The tests in the city of Innopolis will be the Moscow-based company’s first to depend solely on its self-driving system. Yadex began developing a Level 4 self-driving system, which allows completely autonomous control within defined areas, in 2016.
AN says the company already has provided about 4,000 rides in Innopolis and Skolkovo, using robotic cars with backup drivers on board.
In January, Yandex demonstrated its technology at this year’s CES show in Las Vegas. In March the company partnered with South Korean auto supplier Hyundai Mobis to develop self-driving systems. Earlier this month, Yandex began testing its autonomous platform in Tel Aviv, Israel.
