Bend, Ore.-based Element 1 Corp. (e1) and China’s Blue-G New Energy Science and Technology Corp. are developing a hydrogen reformation system for fuel cell-powered buses.
Based on e1’s patented technology, the onboard generator is designed to convert a mixture of methanol and water into hydrogen. Blue-G will integrate the system into fuel-cell buses in China.
The partners aim to commercialize the technology by the end of the decade. Earlier this year e1 won a contract in China to develop a generator capable of making 100 kg of hydrogen per day for fuel cell bus refueling stations. The company also formed a joint venture to commercialize fuel cell systems for China’s telecom market.
Blue-G is a subsidiary of Yixing Electric Auto Co., which produces electric buses and various specialty vehicles. The company signed a $50 million licensing agreement earlier this year with Canada’s Hydrogenics Corp. to integrate fuel cell systems into 1,000 city buses in China.
