Panasonic Corp., a relative latecomer to the market for autonomous driving technology, says its electronic self-driving system will be ready by 2022, Reuters reports.
The consumer electronics giant has been tapping its expertise in cameras and TV sets to develop large-scale integrated circuits needed for advanced image processing and sensing. The company says its autonomous-driving control electronics will be able to handle vehicles at medium and low speeds.
Panasonic supplies lithium-ion batteries to Tesla Inc. and is a partner in the electric carmaker’s giant battery factory in Nevada. In January the company said it wanted to move into the emerging self-driving vehicle market. In April it set up a new automotive r&d unit.
Panasonic aims to nearly double revenue it derives from sales to the auto industry to 2.5 trillion yen ($22 billion) by early 2022.
