Japanese cellular phone giant NTT DoCoMo Inc. says it has created a software program that helps taxi drivers identify areas with a large number of potential passengers.
The system uses anonymized data from cell phone signals to map where people are congregating. Demand patterns are predicted using new stacked de-noising auto-encoder deep-learning algorithms running on an Nvidia DGX-1 supercomputer.
Taxi drivers can access the information from a touchscreen in their vehicle. The system had a 93% accuracy rate during pilot tests earlier this year with 2,500 drivers in Tokyo and Nagoya, according to DoCoMo.
Toyota Motor Corp. is testing a similar service for taxis in Japan. Ride-hailing services such as Uber and Lyft are not allowed in Japan.
