Nissan Motor Co. says it will launch a car-sharing service next week in Japan.
Dubbed e-share mobi, the new car-sharing service will use a fleet of Leaf electric cars and Note e-Power extended-range hybrids that can be reserved and paid for via a mobile app. The vehicles will be equipped with semi-autonomous driving and parking systems and trip recorders to document accident-related data.
Members initially will be able to pick up and return vehicles from 30 stations in select cities in Japan. A broader rollout will follow later. The business will be operated by the carmaker’s Nissan Car Rental Solutions unit, with support by Nihon Unisys’ mobility service platform.
Nissan also is moving forward with plans to test self-driving taxis in Yokohama this spring. The carmaker is teaming with Japanese internet giant DeNa Co. on the program, which will feature a pair of specially equipped Leaf sedans that can be summoned via a smartphone app.
