The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration will test a program designed to advise drivers during the annual registration process whether their vehicles have recalls pending.
The pilot will be conducted by the state of Maryland. Reuters says NHTSA had authority to conduct similar tests in as many as six states, but no others applied.
Carmakers have been setting recall records in recent years, both in the number of campaigns and the total volume of vehicles involves. But NHTSA says recall compliance rates vary from 30% to 70%, with older vehicles having the least success.
Put another way, about one in six cars currently on the road in the U.S.—some 45 million vehicles—have outstanding recall repairs.
