Mitsubishi Motors Corp. plans to relaunch vehicle shipments to Vietnam in June, six months after the country imposed new quality certification rules, The Nikkei reports.

MMC follows Honda Motor Co., which sent a shipment of 2,000 cars to the country in early March to test the procedures. The company predicted the new process would add a one-month delay in delivering cars to dealers.

Vietnam imposed the new process as it lifted a 30% import tax on imported cars. The rules require each batch of imported vehicles to have a quality certification from the country of origin, then undergo a new quality inspection in Vietnam.

Critics say the system is a non-tariff barrier erected to continue shielding the country’s domestic auto industry from regional competition. Car sales in Vietnam dropped 10% last year to 272,800 units, according to the Vietnam Automobile Manufacturers’ Assn.
