Jaguar Land Rover Ltd. has begun testing a self-driving-car system on public roads around the company’s headquarters in Coventry, England.

The test are part of the £20 million ($26 million) UK Autodrive project, which also includes car-to-car and car-to-infrastructure communications. Two other consortia also have begun on-road evaluations of robotic cars.

The U.K. has not yet approved legislation that would allow the sale of autonomous cars.

England staged the first demonstrations of robotic car technologies on public roads a year ago. Those government-backed tests used a Renault Twizzy electric two-seater operating at a cautious 5 mph. The car was prepared by Oxbotica, an Oxford University spinoff, in the town of Milton Keynes.
