On Thursday researchers conducted the first two tests of robotic cars on public roads in Japan.

The ultra-cautious demonstrations were staged in Koto at speeds of 15 kph (9 mph) and 20 kph (12 mph) over predetermined routes of 700 meters (2,200 feet) and 150 meters (500 feet), respectively, The Nikkei reports.

In one of the tests, a sensor-laden minivan followed a route it had previously “memorized,” with every move monitored remotely by a technician. A backup driver in the front passenger seat was poised to stop the vehicle if necessary, according to the newspaper.

Japan has allowed tests of autonomous vehicles on public roads since June.
