General Motors Co. and Honda Motor Co. have agreed to collaborate on developing cells and modules for advanced battery chemistries.

The plan is for the two companies to work on GM’s next-generation battery technology, which GM would then supply to Honda as modules. The partners aim to lower costs through their global manufacturing and purchasing volume.

The companies say each would use the GM system in its own electric cars, mainly in the North American market.

GM and Honda also have been collaborating on fuel cell development since 2013. In January 2017, the companies formed a 50:50 joint venture to make next-generation fuel cell stacks at a GM factory in Michigan. Production is expected to begin in 2020 of modules that combine the fuel cell stack along with cooling, fluid, gas and electrical components.

That venture also is looking for ways to reduce the cost of fuel cells and hydrogen fuel storage devices.
