Bloomberg News says the investment, expected to be announced tomorrow, will bolster Kettering's continuing effort to revive Flint's severely depressed economy. The university, located about a mile from the city center, has become the area's largest landowner.
Bloomberg notes that Flint's population has shrunk to about half its 200,000 peak in the 1960s. More than 40% of its remaining citizens are living in poverty. Flint's plight, including the shrinkage of GM's production base there, was highlighted in 1989 by Michael Moore's satirical documentary Roger & Me.
