The French government says that by 2040 it will prohibit the sale of vehicles powered by gasoline or diesel engines.
The policy would eventually make electric vehicles the only viable choice for personally owned transportation in the country. EVs currently account for roughly 1% of new-car sales in mature markets.
Bloomberg News reports the plan will offer government incentives to coax car owners to scrap gasoline-powered cars built before 2001 and any diesel that is more than 20 years old. France also proposes to end oil and gas exploration within its territories, eliminate all coal-fired power plants by 2022 and encourage homeowners to install their own energy generators.
The scheme aims to help make France carbon-neutral, says Energy Minister Nicholas Hulot. He presented the plan ahead of tomorrow’s start of a two-day annual meeting of the Group of 20 in Hamburg, Germany. The G20 represents the world’s 20 largest economies.
