Sales of diesel-powered vehicles in Europe fell 8% last year to 6.8 million units, according to JATO Dynamics.
The decline shrank diesel’s share of the Europe market to less than 44%, the powertrain’s worst showing in 10 years. Diesel demand plummeted 21% in December, while overall market sales were off 5%.
Registrations of gasoline-powered vehicles climbed nearly 11% in 2017 and now account for more than 50% of the European market. Sales of hybrids and all-electric vehicles soared 46% last year to 737,000 units for a 5% market share.
The outlook for diesels is unlikely to improve anytime soon. In addition to the ongoing fallout from Volkswagen’s emissions cheating scandal, new reports show that German carmakers backed research that exposed humans and monkeys to diesel exhaust fumes as part of an initiative to portray diesels favorably.
