Daimler AG has renamed its fuel cell development business as Mercedes-Benz Fuel Cell GmbH.
Based in Kirchheim-Teck, Germany, the company was founded as XCELLSIS AG in 1997. It has operated as a fully owned subsidiary of Daimler since 2009, most recently as NuCellSys GmbH.

Headed by Christian Mohrdieck, Mercedes-Benz Fuel Cell is responsible for concepts, component and software development, testing and validation for fuel cell-related systems. This includes the 700-bar (10,000 psi) hydrogen storage tanks.
The subsidiary developed the drivetrain and the hydrogen storage system for the fuel cell version of Mercedes’ GLC crossover model (pictured). The vehicle launches in Germany early this year.
The technology also is being adapted for use in the Mercedes Citaro city bus. Applications in other vehicle segments and stationary systems also are under evaluation.
