Continental AG is developing wireless and universal battery charging systems that promise to make it easier, faster and more efficient to recharge plug-in hybrid and all-electric vehicles.
The wireless system, which uses induction technology to replenish the battery pack when a vehicle is parked over a charging pad, can supply one mile of driving for every 90 seconds of charging. A “micro-navigation” system with magnetic location helps position vehicles over the charger. Conti claims the device, which can work through layers of snow or leaves, is 10 times more accurate than current parking assist systems.
The second system, dubbed “AllCharge,” is built into a plug-in or EV and enables the vehicle to use any charging station, regardless of current type, voltage or charging rate. The technology teams a modified electric motor and inverter with a DC/DC converter, which Conti says eliminates the need for bulky onboard cables and other components.
When connected to an external AC charger, AllCharge directs current through the electric motor to the inverter, where it is converted into DC current before being supplied to the battery. For DC charging, current flows directly through the DC/DC converter to the battery.
Conti estimates a 10-minute charge with AllCharge will provide a 50-km (31-mile) driving range with an AC system and 150 km (93 miles) at a DC station. The system also is bi-directional, which allows vehicles to provide electricity back to the grid or to power off-board electronic devices.
Conti plans to demonstrate the two charging systems next month at the CES electronics show in Las Vegas. The company aims to commercialize the technologies early next decade.
