China’s state-owned electric utility, State Grid Corp., has offered to collaborate with Japan’s CHAdeMO Assn. to develop a common standard for systems used to charge electric vehicles.
CHAdeMO, whose EV criteria are widely followed in Japan, also has thousands of charging points in 70 other countries. The organization says it is in detailed discussions with State Grid about common designs for plugs, charging methods and other features.
Separately, CHAdeMO denies that its charging standard competes with others, such as Europe’s Combo system. The association tells reporters its aim is only to achieve compatibility among regional standards.
The Japanese group predicts that electrified vehicles will comprise half the world’s new-car market by 2030. CHAdeMO also predicts that virtually all cars by 2050 will be powered by batteries or electric fuel cells.
