BMW AG is the latest carmaker to test a program that replaces traditional car ownership with a monthly subscription that enables customers to repeatedly swap vehicles across a range of models.
Automotive News reports the program, called Access by BMW, is taking applications now. The plan will begin delivering cars in May through the brand’s dealership in Nashville, Tenn., which is part of multi-brand retail giant Sonic Automotive Inc. Clutch Technologies LLC, an Atlanta-based subscription specialist, is processing applications.
Customers pay for the service by the month and may cancel at any time. Fees cover maintenance, insurance, roadside assistance and unlimited mileage. Subscribers will have the freedom to swap cars as often as they wish within any given month.
BMW tells AN the program will begin with two packages. For $2,000 per month, customers will have open use of the company’s M2 sport coupe, 4 Series coupe and convertible, 5 Series sedan and X5 crossover vehicle. For $3,700 per month, subscribers will be able to rotate through high-performance M versions of the company’s 4, 5 and 6 Series cars and X5 and X6 crossovers.
More tiers, including one priced below $2,000 per month, will be added later, according to the company.
