BMW AG and partner Brilliance China Automotive Holdings Ltd. have opened a factory in Shenyang to make batteries for plug-in hybrid cars.
Called the High-Voltage Battery Centre, the facility will support production of plug-in variants of BMW’s 5 Series sedan made by the partners in nearby Dadong. BMW did not reveal the plant’s capacity.
The company says producing its own batteries helps it gain technological and system know-how. The Shenyang plant joins BMW batterymaking complexes in Dingolfing, Germany, and Spartanburg, S.C.
All three facilities manufacture cells—each about the size of a paperback book—and then assemble them into battery modules. The completed modules are packaged along with power control electronics in aluminum housings that have been shaped to fit specific vehicle architectures.
