Waterloo, Ont.-based BlackBerry Ltd. and China’s Baidu Inc. have agreed to partner on software systems for self-driving vehicles.
Under the deal, Blackberry’s QNX operating system will be the foundation for the Apollo open platform Baidu is developing for connected and automated vehicles. Baidu’s CarLife smartphone integration software for connected cars, high-definition maps and DuerOS artificial intelligence communications system also will run on BlackBerry’s infotainment platform.
The integrated systems will help speed the development and commercialization of next-generation technologies, according to the companies. Baidu says it now has more than 70 partners in its Apollo platform, which it announced last summer.
BlackBerry acquired QNX Software Systems from Harman International Industries Inc. in 2010. In recent years the company also has formed partnerships with Delphi, Denso, Qualcomm, Yanfeng and several chipmakers.
