A court-ordered ban on diesel-powered vehicles in Stuttgart that was to begin in January has been suspended pending the outcome of an appeal by the German state of Baden-Wuerttemberg.
The measure was demanded by environmental group Deutsche Umwelthilfe (DUH) shortly after Volkswagen AG’s diesel emission scandal was revealed two years ago. A regional court agreed that prohibiting all diesels in the regional capital was the only way Stuttgart could meet EU limits on emissions of particulates and nitrogen oxides.
Baden-Wuerttemberg is home to diesel makers Daimler and Porsche and diesel components supplier Robert Bosch. The regional government is a coalition of environmentalist and conservative parties.
Reuters says the government intends to review the court ruling before deciding when and if to implement the order. In the meantime, the appeal to a federal administrative court in Leipzig has suspended the original edict.
