A big bottleneck in testing prototype parts is verifying that the component actually matches the original digital design, notes Jeff Schipper, director of special operations for Proto Labs Inc. in Maple Plain, Minn.

Proto Labs significantly speeds up the process with a technique called digital structure light scans. The method creates a digitized “point cloud” of the prototype part. Software then superimposes the point map over the original digital design, thereby enabling an inspector to immediately determine whether the part matches. There is no need to perform a statistical analysis.

Schipper says Proto Labs is using the technique primarily to verify prototype injection-molded plastic components but also can apply it for CNC-machined and 3D-printed prototype parts.
