Alphabet Inc.’s Waymo unit is adding Atlanta to the list of cities in which the company is testing its self-driving vehicle technology.
Waymo began mapping downtown Atlanta last week and will start testing its autonomous driving technology in specially equipped Chrysler Pacifica minivans when the job is completed. No timetable or other details about the program were provided.
Waymo has tested the automated Pacificas in 24 cities across the U.S. Most of the tests have occurred on public roads in five states: Arizona, California, Michigan, Texas and Washington. Atlanta was chosen for the heavy congestion of its roadways.
All of Waymo’s tests to date have included a backup driver on board. Driverless tests with passengers are due to start early this year in Phoenix.
