VW Offers Loyalty Incentive for U.S. Customers

Volkswagen AG is offering its existing customers in the U.S. a $2,000 credit toward the purchase or lease of a new VW brand gasoline- or diesel-powered vehicle. The offer is in addition for $2,000-$4,000 already available on select cars and crossovers.
The incentive aims to help retain existing customers after the company's admission two weeks ago that is sold 482,000 diesel-powered vehicles in the U.S. that had been rigged to cheat federal emission tests. Combined passenger vehicle sales in the U.S. jumped 16% in September to their strongest annualized rate in 10 years, but demand for VW brand cars rose less than 1%.
The offer, dismissed by skeptics as woefully inadequate, helps buy time until VW announces what it plans to do about the rigged cars. Until then, analysts say, the brand's reputation will continue to erode.
Automotive News notes that a poll by Kelley Blue Book conducted a few days after the scandal broke found half of respondents distrustful of VW.
