Efforts to reach agreement about how to fix Volkswagen AG’s 580,000 cheater diesels in the U.S. are progressing, CEO Matthias Mueller tells reporters ahead of the Geneva auto show.

Mueller described the talks as “constructive” but didn’t say when he expects to reach a “sustainable overall solution.” The company has been barred from selling diesel vehicles in the U.S. since its emission cheating was revealed in mid-September.

The complex negotiations involve technical fixes to the emission control systems for three types of diesels, regulatory fines and criminal claims by the U.S. Dept. of Justice. VW also faces hundreds of consumer and state-level lawsuits claiming the company defrauded customers.

Mueller also reiterates that VW expects to have a final report by the end of April that details how the company developed and implemented ways to rig its diesels to evade emission standards.
