Volvo Car Group says its new family of modular engines will include a new technology for diesels that monitors pressure for each fuel injector.

Traditional diesels use a single pressure sensor in the common rail that supplies fuel to each injector. Monitoring each injector individually enables better control over the fuel injected during each combustion cycle, according to the company.

The self-adapting system, dubbed i-ART, uses a small computer atop each injector to monitor and adjust fuel flow. Volvo says combining the technology with an unusually high rail pressure of 2,500 bar (36,200 psi) results in better fuel economy, lower emissions and more power. The company adds that the engine also sounds better.
