A federal district court judge in San Francisco has denied Fiat Chrysler Automobile NV’s request to drop a lawsuit that claims the company’s diesel trucks and SUVs were rigged to evade emission control laws.
The complaint seeks class-action status for as many as 150,000 owners of diesel-powered Dodge Ram pickup trucks and Jeep Grand Cherokee SUVs. The lawsuit asserts that engines in 2014-2016 models in those vehicles emit as much as 20 times the legal limit of nitrogen oxides under normal driving conditions.
The same issue prompted a civil lawsuit filed against FCA last May by the U.S. Dept. of Justice. The company proposes fixing the emissions issue with updated software it introduced with its 2017 models. A settlement with the Justice Dept. covering repairs, fines and environmental restitution is likely next month.
