Uber Technologies Inc. says it is setting up a small lab in Toronto to work on automotive-related artificial intelligence software that can be used in self-driving cars.

The Canadian lab—Uber’s first outside the U.S.—will be headed by Raquel Urtasun, a University of Toronto associate professor and a global expert in AI research. She will establish the lab with eight students. Uber hopes the facility also will attract other AI-related talent from the region. The lab will focus on AI software that helps self-driving cars detect and recognize objects around them.

Uber also conducts research on technology that enables autonomous vehicles at labs in Pittsburgh and San Francisco. The company says it has no plans to test robotic cars in Toronto.
