The Trump administration’s proposed federal budget would virtually eliminate funding to pay for emission and fuel economy testing by the Environmental Protection Agency.
Reuters cites a former EPA official who says the planned $48 million cut would eliminate 99% of the current budget. The news service says the proposal would partly fund operations by increasing fees paid by carmakers and engine manufacturers for such testing.
The White House budget would slash EPA’s overall budget by about 31%, eliminating 168 out of 304 fulltime jobs. The industry's Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers trade group worries that dramatic reductions could delay EPA certifications required to allow new models to be sold in the U.S.
Observers point out that the budget indicates the Trump administration’s general philosophical direction but isn’t likely to be confirmed by Congress in its current form.
