Toyota Motor Corp. says it will add plug-in hybrid versions of its Corolla small sedan and Levin coupe variant in China in 2018. The company also hopes to soon launch a hybrid edition of its RAV4 SUV there.
Last autumn Toyota began making conventional hybrid versions of both models in China. But neither has enough range in electric-only mode—at least 50 km (31 miles)—to qualify for government purchase incentives for “new-energy” cars. Toyota tells reporters ahead of this week’s Beijing auto show it expects its plug-in models to qualify for the discounts.
The company isn’t clear whether it plans to build the plug-ins in China. But its officials at today’s event in Beijing say the option is a possibility.
Last year the government’s incentive program nearly quadrupled sales of electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles to 330,000 units. The subsidies are expected to continue until 2020.
Honda Motor Corp. plans to roll out a locally produced hybrid version of its Accord midsize sedan in China this summer. The company intends to add a plug-in version by 2020, according to The Nikkei.
